Though Hermes isn’t the best characterized in his myths, his importance in the Greek mindset should not be underestimated. He is the god in charge of traders, thieves, messengers, herders, travelers, luck, gymnasiums, and more! Not to mention, the few times when men openly committed acts against Hermes (the Mutilation of the Herms in 415 BC attributed to Alcibiades, for example), the general public came together against that individual, and in Alcibiades’ case, had him sentenced to death (though the Mutilation was only one of many factors in that case, and the trial leading up to the conviction was unusual, to say the least).

i’m going to rip your heart out and
feed it to my dogs and when they
accuse me of murder i’m going to
look them right in the eye and say
“it’s not my fault did you not see
where he was did you not see what
he was wearing did you not see what
time of night it was i cannot be held
responsible for this crime —
he was asking for it”.
actaeon was not the first man to bleed out
at my feet and he will not be the last.
